The Genesis
Birth of the Unicorn
In the final months of the millennium, something magical was brewing in Helsinki. At Club Hype, nestled inside the Hotel Ramada President on Annankatu 41, a young DJ named Janne Mansnerus—known to the scene as DJ Tab—was about to create something that would define Finnish trance culture for decades to come.
Club Hallmark opened its doors with a simple promise: "Quality nightclubbing since 1999." The intimate venue, decorated by the legendary Saco, became a sanctuary for uplifting trance. With a 40 FIM admission (about €6.70) and a strict 20+ age limit, Hallmark attracted a mature, passionate crowd who came not just for the music, but for the experience.
The early documentation from Finland Rave Info (damicon.fi/fri) captured the essence: "Club Hype, Annankatu 41, Helsinki. Resident DJ: Tab. Music: Uplifting trance. Monthly events. Age limit: 20." The unicorn symbol emerged early—a mythical creature representing the magical, almost impossible nature of what they were creating.
December 16, 2000 marked a milestone: Hallmark's first major international collaboration. Sundissential—England's leading hard house brand—came to Kaapelitehdas for a legendary night. Paul Kershaw, Charlotte Birch, and Mark Gray shared the decks with Finnish heroes Orkidea, Tab, Actos Dei, and Jokke. Two dancefloors plus a chill-out area. 125 FIM admission. And a promise: free entry to all Hallmark events that year for attendees.
By 2005, the club had found its home at La Tour (Mannerheimintie 5). The year was packed with legendary events: ANTARCTICA in January, the 5TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION in February, TITANIUM in March featuring DJ Mag Top 100 DJ Proteus, SUNSHINE in May/June, THE COLOSSEUM in October, HELSINKIVIBE featuring three producers from the legendary HelsinkiVibe Studios, A PLACE CALLED HAPPINESS (celebrating Orkidea's album) in November, and NYE2005 to close out the year. Members paid just 7€, with tickets available at Street Beat on Mikonkatu 8.
"You're invited. Your inhibitions aren't."
